At St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City, Pope Francis said, “We have to ask ourselves, are we capable of counting our blessings?”
Perhaps what Pope Francis was trying to say was that we have more blessings than we even realize! And it’s far too easy to go through this life without being grateful for many of them.
When we don’t take the time to count our blessings, we forget that they’re there. Sadly, we tend to do this most with the greatest blessings in life. Sure, we thank the person behind the counter who just handed us our change, but when’s the last time you told someone that you treasure the gift of their friendship? As silly as it sounds, have you thanked your kids for the joy of being their mom or dad? Do you thank your spouse for the gift of his or her life?
Friends, family, a good meal, a pretty sunset…these are just a few things that make you a super lotto winner! Be sure to cash in. Take a few minutes every day to stop, notice your blessings, and thank God for them. That’s where gratitude begins. And joy is never far behind.
