For the Jews of old, the temple was the holiest place in the universe, and the spiritual center of the temple was the Holy of Holies. It was blocked off by a thick curtain, and only the high priest could enter to offer sacrifice to God. He had to have a rope tied around his ankle in case he died there, so he could be dragged out because no one else was ever allowed in.
I lead a pilgrimage to the Holy Land every year and to this day you can see Jewish people from around the world come to the Wailing Wall, the place closest to where the Holy of Holies was, just to touch it. When Jesus died, the curtain separating the Holy of Holies was torn in two, not from bottom to top, which man could have done, but, in an act of God, from top to bottom.
Why? Because in the new covenant, God’s dwelling place is in you. You’re the holiest place in the universe. Do you live like it?
