One day, I called my wife to complain about how frustrated I was about sitting in traffic and she said, “I sympathize but I’ve got to call you onto holiness because I love you.” I love my wife for that.
She told me a story that she heard of a seminarian who was serving with the Missionaries of Charity. He was scrubbing the bathroom floor and he was complaining while he was doing it. He was in a horrible mood. And this Missionary of Charity walked by him laughing and he said, “What are you doing? Why are you laughing?” And she said, “I’m laughing because you’re totally wasting your time.” He asked, “What are you talking about?” She said, “If you’re not doing your work with love, you’re totally wasting your sacrifice.”
Suffering is an unavoidable part of everyday life. But you have the power to make it a fruitful part of your spiritual life. Get intentional about offering it up in love. Anyone can do a good day well. THIS is your moment to become a Saint. Don’t waste it.
